MISSIONS
MISSIONS
OCTOBER 2025
This year’s theme, "Cast Your Net," calls us to be "fishers of people", spreading the Gospel locally and globally. Throughout the month, we'll hear from missionaries we support and learn how each of us is called to be part of God's story of redemption in the world. This is a great opportunity to be inspired, equipped, and sent.
Missionary Christmas
October 19 | 6 PM
Missionary Christmas is a family-friendly, Christmas-themed event where we pray for and give to our missionaries. Join us for carols, cookies, fun activities, and a guest speaker in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, October 19, at 6 PM.
Each gift given to the Missionary Christmas Fund provides meaningful financial support to those sharing the Gospel around the world, helping meet needs that arise during the holidays.
This year, if we raise $7,000 for the Missionary Christmas Fund, our Global Outreach Committee has graciously offered to match that amount.
The Missionary Christmas Fund is open through the first week of November. Please designate your gifts as “Missionary Christmas” to ensure our missionaries receive them.
First Baptist Church of Downers Grove financially supports international and domestic missionaries and organizations that all have the same common theme: sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Missionaries have needs such as housing, transportation, schooling, and resources to further their mission. First Baptist Downers Grove's Global Outreach Committee stays in regular contact to be aware of needs, prayer requests, accomplishments, and general well-being, as many teams face persecution. We encourage you to pray for our missionaries and give to the Missions Fund as you feel led.
MISSIONARIES STATESIDE
CRU
BEN & KATIE NEWTON
Ben and Katie Newton are serving college students at the University of Wisconsin campuses in the Madison area. They work with Cru to disciple and train Christian students and equip them to reach out to others who don’t know Christ.
They strive to find common ground with students and introduce them to Jesus. They also mentor younger Christian students and help them grow into maturity in their faith. Matthew 28:18-20 and 2 Timothy 2:2 are the focus of their leadership.
ETHNOS360
TIM & JOAN CARMICAL
The Carmicals serve with Ethnos360 as Midwest representatives. Before returning to the states, they spent several years serving as missionaries in Papua New Guinea. They are educating, encouraging, and informing churches to work with unreached tribal groups around the world. Tim speaks to churches, youth groups, schools, colleges, and clubs.
The Carmicals pray that God sees fit to use their ministry to challenge the next generation of church planters.
PRISON MINISTRY
RUTH DAVIES
Ruth Davies has a heart for young people no matter their situation. She serves people in prison who are searching for answers in God’s word. She also encourages chaplains and family members who are dealing with the struggles of a loved one in prison.
She is instrumental in helping incarcerated people find help and hope by providing resources for them. By writing and praying for people looking for hope, she reminds them that each one is important to God and can have access to a new life in Him.
CHOSEN PEOPLE MINISTRIES
ROY & JOANNE SCHWARCZ
Roy and Joanne Schwarcz have been in the FBC missions family since 2014. Their focus, as part of Chosen People Ministries, is to reach the Jewish community in Chicago through prayer, evangelism, discipleship, and service.
Roy and Joanne host a Bible study focusing on how the Old and New Covenants are connected and show that Jesus is the promised Messiah. Their services are designed to unite Jews and Christians in celebrating and giving thanks for their common history and heritage.
MISSIONS DOOR
LARRY & KAY MARLATT
Larry and Kay Marlatt have served God’s people since 1968. They help train inner–city believers in evangelism, discipleship, and leadership. They have the heart to reach those who are searching for God.
They also support pastors in their ministries, teach classes on the life of Christ, and train believers. Larry and Kay plan to focus their vision on the Good News of the Gospel for those whom they live by and point them to Christ.
MISSIONARIES ABROAD
POWER TO CHANGE
MARK & MARY SWINERTON
Mark and Mary Swinerton serve with Power to Change in Australia. Mark is the church's audio and data coordinator, as well as a church leader. Power to Change trains University students to share their faith with students graduating from high school.

ONE COLLECTIVE
JEFF & MICHELLE MCQUEARY
The McQuearys began their mission work together in Costa Rica in 2003. They lead a campus to help Latinos become missionaries around the world. They also enable youth ministers from North America and Costa Rica to connect and learn from each other. Additionally, they started a youth group center in their town to provide a place where students can connect with God and Christian friends. As these projects develop, they pray that more will come to grow in their relationship with God.
GREATER EUROPE MISSION
NATHAN & VERA BECK
Nathan & Vera love the freedom to share the Gospel, make disciples, and help those in need. They have had great opportunities to work with refugees in Prague, who are asking questions about God and becoming believers as they see what God is doing around them. They are encouraged that Nathan’s English teaching has helped him make connections and find kids who are ready to learn God’s plan of salvation.
GREATER EUROPE MISSION
GREG & DEBBY NICHOLS
Greg and Debby have served the Lord through Greater Europe Mission since 1993. They serve in the Czech Republic by bringing help and hope in the name of Jesus to people who are displaced and seeking asylum. They are using the opportunity God has provided to share Christ with a diverse group of people in the Refugee Integration Center, outside of Prague. They have been encouraged by many who learn of God’s love for them and have committed themselves to Christ and have been saved.
BIBLICAL MINISTRIES WORLDWIDE
JOSH & LAUREN ALLINGER
Josh and Lauren joined the FBC missionary family in 2019. Their mission organization is Biblical Ministries Worldwide. They feel God has called them to France to plant churches, start Bible studies with new and old believers, and train leaders, so they can continue planting more churches throughout the country. They see this as a lifelong commitment to the people of France as they establish a base and network of co-workers in ChrisT.
GREATER EUROPE MISSION
GARY & KATE DEGRAAF
Gary and Kate serve in Lille, France, with Greater Europe Mission. Gary works with the college student ministry, leading worship, and teaching. Kate teaches Sunday school, is involved with the kids club outreach, and works to invest in the lives of the people in their village. They hope these relationships will grow stronger and that many will follow the Lord. They pray that God will work through them in establishing fellowship with their neighbors and community.
HOPE BIBLE MISSION
DAN & LAURIE ANDERSON
Dan and Laurie serve with Hope Bible Mission in Guatemala. For 25 years, the Lord has used them to serve in Latin America and Spain. Their current focus is to train Christians to engage in ministry in the marketplace. The purpose is to develop leadership strategies in their communities through evangelism and ministries of compassion and relief efforts among the poorest of the poor. They also host three weekly Bible studies with mostly un-churched, but spiritually sensitive, people.
EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH OF CANADA
JON & LAURA PRINS
Jon and Laura have served the local church in Japan and set up outreach programs in their churches through English teaching. Most Japanese people who become Christians as adults have had some contact with a church during their childhood years, so summer outreach programs are an important way to influence young people for Christ.
Jon and Laura are praying the Lord will continue to multiply their efforts, so that many will come to believe the Good News.
ETHNOS360 AVIATION
MARK & AUTUMN BOGNER
Mark joined the Ethnos360 Aviation team in 2021. In Papua New Guinea, his role of Maintenance Controller means he is responsible for ensuring the team's aircraft remain airworthy, able to serve missionaries throughout the country.
Autumn is training with Ethnos360 to become a career member so they can serve long-term. The training covers spiritual life, stewarding relationships, culture and language acquisition, the process of church planting, and practical skills for life overseas.

SAM & NICOLE FIALA
Sam and Nicole Fiala serve with SAMAIR Peru, using aviation to reach remote communities with the hope of the Gospel.
Together, Sam and Nicole are excited to serve with the SAMAIR Peru team in Pucallpa. SAMAIR’s work impacts nearly 20 distinct people groups each year, providing vital support for those carrying the message of Jesus to hard-to-reach places. The Fialas are eager to live out their calling to serve and build relationships, helping bring hope and transformation across Peru.

DAN B.
